Taegeuk Il Jang
Taegeuk Il Jang represents the symbol Geun (pronounced gyun, also spelled Keon), which means the heaven (or the sky). Geun symbolizes the beginning of the universe and the source of creation. This symbol is appropriate in Taegeuk as well, since it is the first and most basic poomse, and thus symbolizes the beginning of one's training in Taekwondo.
This form introduces the basic techniques of Taekwondo. Caution should be exercised, however, as some technical execution may be tricky:
- Transitional movements between two different stances (i.e. ap kubi to ap sogi)
- Hand techniques executed opposite the front leg (momtong baro jireugi)
- Execution of a hand technique without stepping forward
